چکیده

A lower mantle S-wave triplication is detected using shortand long-period SH seismograms in the distance range 70 ø to 95 ø . Modeling of the observations with synthetic seismograms indicates that the tripliGation is produced by a 2.75 • 0.25% shear velocity increase about 280 km above the core-mantle boundary. The SH data from intermediate and deep focus events for three distinct source ragion-receiver array combinations show generally consistent travel time and relative amplitude behavior of the triplication. There are small, systematic travel time shifts between the source regions which suggest regional variations in the depth of the discontinuity of up to 40 km.

Investigation of a Lower Mantle Shear Wave Triplication Using a Broadband Array

SH signals recorded by an array of four broadband (Benioff 1-90) instruments, run by Caltech, are inspected for evidence of a lower mantle shear wave velocity discontinuity previously detected using WWSSN data. Deep focus earthquakes beneath Argentina span the distance range 78 ø to 82 ø from the array, where the triplication in the travel time curve produced by the discontinuity is expected to...

Seismic evidence for accumulated oceanic crust above the 660-km discontinuity beneath southern Africa

[1] High-pressure assemblages of subducted oceanic crust are denser than the normal upper mantle but less dense than the uppermost lower mantle. Thus subducted oceanic crust may accumulate at the base of the upper mantle. Direct observational evidence for this hypothesis, however, remains elusive. We present an analysis of a negativepolarity shear wave converted from compressional wave at a sei...

An analysis of SS precursors using spectral-element method seismograms

The traveltimes of underside shear wave reflections (i.e. SS precursors) are widely used data for mapping the topography of mantle discontinuities in the upper mantle. Here, we examine the accuracy of ray theory in estimating the contribution of shear velocity heterogeneity in the mantle to SS–S400S, SS–S670S and S400S–S670S traveltimes. We analyse stacks of spectral-element method waveforms co...

EVIDENCE OF A LOWER MANTLE SHEAR VELOCITY DISCONTINUITY IN S AND sS PHASES

Teleseismic recordings of direct S and sS body wave phases, and their core-reflected counterparts ScS and sScS, from intermediate and deep focus earthquakes are used to analyze the lowermost mantle shear velocity structure beneath Alaska. A model with a 2.75 % shear velocity increase 280 km above the core-mantle boundary accurately matches waveform complexities in both the S and sS wavetrains. ...

Finite frequency tomography of D00 shear velocity heterogeneity beneath the Caribbean

[1] The shear velocity structure in the lowermost 500 km of the mantle beneath the Caribbean and surrounding areas is determined by seismic tomography applied to a suite of Sd-SKS, ScS-S, (Scd + Sbc)-S, and ScS-(Scd + Sbc) differential times, where (Scd + Sbc) is a pair of overlapping triplication arrivals produced by shear wave interaction with an abrupt velocity increase at the top of the D00...
